I vote yes for replays alone. Also, I would like to request a special build to play test the proposed feature. Speculation is no substitute for the real thing. Who knows, more than one person with a strong opinion either way might change their minds.

Let me discuss with the magma folks the possibility of have a public beta of the feature... the issue is it requires 1.8 so it's not like we can just hack it in to 1.7.2 like we did with some of the other features. I'll keep you informed.
Regardless I'll get some different zoom level screenshots tonight.

this is a bad idea since noobs would always play at max zoom since that's what they're used to from other rts games, and it'd be a pain to explain to them that's it's better to play mostly zoomed in. and yes this 14 year old game still has noobs. nevertheless i voted yes because it was the first option. well, if you can see more than your opponent then yes, that = dumbing down the game if you can both see equal, neither having the advantage = not dumbing down the game if your opponent can see more of the map = harder to sneak up on = harder to kill = opposite of dumbing down the game

Voted no because I'm already sick of people bitching.
Implement it for filmz & especially observers if possible.
Also, make it so you can turn on ren's high res units and still play with the luddites, they're tight (hires units not luddites).

I want as many options as possible.
What's obvious is, any big change like this or Sam's might make how we currently play "easier", but it also opens up new ways of playing the game to master. So what if the captain can recline in his easy chair, much more able to focus on moving players around? All that means is that the other areas of his power become that much more important.
A good player shouldn't fear the masses catching up to him.

The key point to discuss here is not whether it removes one skill in favor of others (which it obviously does), but what is the best use of the finite resources that a player has (time, micro) that can help differentiate them in skill from other players the most. Ability to watch minimap and pan/zoom around is obviously one option, but is it the most compelling?

Count me IN for this beta Ability to watch minimap and pan/zoom around is obviously one option, but is it the most compelling? Ha, I'm so used to playing with the map off anyway... I've always felt that the camera constraints were a significant factor limiting Myth's sophistication. With a game this old, the current limitations on zoom seem completely arbitrary. We already have players playing with customized observer constants and formations--- I'd love to see some agreement on universalization in the form of changes to the default settings.

Good point, default formations should be more in line with standard custom formation, especially now that fear doesn't work in newer OSes.

Absolutely. I haven't been able to update my observer settings or formations for like a year and a half.

watching the overhead map is something you are forced to do because that's the compromise Bungie came up with since computers weren't powerful enough to zoom out. you seriously think the great minds who created Myth thought of all the possible ways to give you some idea of what's going on in the periphery of your vision and decided a tiny little postage stamp sized overhead map with red dots was the best way to do that? when bungie made myth they designed it my making a list of things they liked in games and things that sucked and they tried to include as many things they liked and none of the sux. but they were limited by tecyhnology. a tiny overhead with red dots was a way to show a bgger picture of the map that didn't tax the cpu, nothing more - watching an overhead map is not one of the thigns that makes Myth great, so lets move on.
if you hate the idea of this change because it lets you see more, i hope you are consistent and also hate and refuse to play on a widescreen monitor - because you see more of the battlefield on a widescreen than on a 'regular' old school monitor - and BUngie didn't make Myth for widescreen monitors - Magma did that. so if you don't want useful zoom stop playing on a widescreen monitor all you hippocrits.

Looking at that screen shot makes Myth look like a whole new game... and I want to play it! Also, what OS does fear not work in?
