was the name "The Black Company" derived from The Black Company Chronicles, by Glen Cook? I am reading the books right now... seem pretty good so far.

Yes, it was, they are pretty good, the Myth Lore spin off is better though in my opinion.

Yeah Malazan is good I guess, but it's all over the place kind of and the magic involved in the Malazan empire is so obscure it's hard to follow, you can compare it to dragon ball Z or some cartoon where, everytime two powerful sorcerers are having a duel, everyone else is left inconsequential in the battle because they are basically about to destroy everything around them, and just when you think you know who is who a new character or race is introduced with even more powers and your liek wtf is going on. It makes for long interesting climax, but for the first 500 pgs of Malazon books your like wtf is going on, I'm following 6 different characters.

Have you read George RR Martin, HBO series aside, and hyper criticism of his last two books aside, he's still the best I've read. Que other fantasy nerd to come into thread and tell me 37 reasons why I'm wrong...

Yes... I found the same thing with Malazan. I made it part way through the first book and was like... what the *cruiser* is even happening here?... so I stop reading.
And ya I've read all of A Song of Ice and Fire... amazing series. Definitely enjoyed.
Considering maybe reading The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson next... or the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I think I've seen you mention something about Wheel of Time before...
Either way... gonna take a long time to get through the entire Black Company Chronicles first...

malazan is one of the best ones in the genre, but not for everyone and definately not baby's first book. Overly complex, over the top and has a lot of internal logic that isn't really clear to reader for most part. But on the other hand its different, unpredictable , complex and has some some great stuff in it.
i'll recommend Joe Abercrombie next . Pretty easy read style but lot less inbred than most fantasy.
But if you aren't yet utterly bored with farm-boy-with-a-destiny shit then go ahead and read wheel of time.
ice and fire is good but it will never be finished. or if it will it be rushed and horrible.
