Do Amazon rent out servers for individuals on their cloud solution. I know we have an account at work but I doubt I will be allowed to borrow one

using Amazon Web Services (their cloud computing services) and EC2 is a bit different than using your traditional server box. they don't really have a concept of a server, they instead use "instances" which are not guaranteed to exist indefinitely (it is in the cloud, it can be taken down and moved randomly at any moment), and you have to design the architecture of the AWS deployment to account for this with the appropriate redundancy fail over, etc. I wouldn't recommend it, especially if you don't know what you are doing with AWS.

Right for myth I think we'd be fine with a typical "virtual" server setup. We really don't have enough people playing and the metaserver is simple enough that I doubt we need a large amount of dedicated resources. We just want the metaserver running on some sort of virtual server on the same network as the web server and database (the latter of which are inexpensive to host these days).

I just talked to a family member that has a small business server they can give me. I'm not sure on the specs or anything but it is a dedicated server. I'll prob have my hands on it this weekend.

I'll give 100 euros if I can get a customised rank icon : A pink penis.

Honestly, if we had a decent rank system I would play more often and the reason for this is that I prefer to play against people who are actually trying to win.
If the server moved, I would move with it. Marius is fine, but...stale.

2 days ago the friend of mine who introduced me to myth back in 1997 and was actually a very good player randomly text me "Everytime I hear Master P's 'Ghetto D' I think of Myth." -- Which in itself is funny. More importantly is that I've tried to get him to come back for years as he is still an active gamer. His reply: "I don't know, I figure it's not what it used to be. I like the ranking and all with emps and the celestials."
For all the players out there who claim Rank doesn't matter I strongly disagree. Whether YOUR rank matters is a personal opinion. I argue that the implementation of a Functioning Rank System (the Myth Caste System can be incredibly addictive) is a necessary aspect of this game if we are interested in finding a way to make our once thriving, yet still living community grow again.
If you rank it, they will come.

For all the players out there who claim Rank doesn't matter I strongly disagree. Well, it demonstrably does not predict who will win games in any reasonable way these days due to too small a community and no matchmaking. Both are pretty crippling to any ranking system as there just aren't enough useful bits of information that come from game results vs. the many confounding factors. If you rank it, they will come. Meh, it's sort of a chicken and egg problem and despite your single example, I don't really buy that there are thousands of people out there that would happy to come back and play if there was a ranking system. Hell MNet has a ranking system and it has hardly produced that effect. Point out whatever flaws you like, but it's at least as competent and implementation as the original Bungie system, and thus you'd expect to at least get some subset of these players "back". Like I said, really you need both a larger community *and* some sort of matchmaking system (i.e. players can't be allowed to choose their games selectively, else ranking is fairly meaningless) for it to be worth it. Given that I doubt the former, implementing the latter - which would be a large undertaking - seems like a poor use of time.
