Mostly stuff to GKG (i do actually like gkg! and find bantering on the forums and such with him enjoyable for the most part).
more competitive than now, sure I will give them that. Not by much though, the mwc2k1 finals wasn't really close. I also still think 2006 was the peak of competitiveness and maybe even care.
Umm what lol?
I was in the 2k1 finals and they were pretty close. If memory is correct 12inch beat np 5-2 in the regular final to force it into sudden death (since np were unbeaten at that point) and then lost 2-0 in sudden death. I'm pretty sure anybody involved in the 2k1 finals would agree the finals were tough, extemely competitive and quite close. The 2k1 finals were like 5-4 12"-NP even though NP won them by winning sudden death.
At the same time, you say you think 2k6 was the peak of competitiveness and care so therefore those finals must have obviously been close or closer than 2k1 finals.
Lol well funnily enough i was in one of the finalist teams in 2k6 also (Thundercox).
In 2k6 we (Tcox) got raped raped raped by NP in the finals.
The actual points score (47-23) in those finals may look reasonable but the truth is that NP raped Tcox 7-1. Yes 7 games to 1 in the final. How on earth does that appear to be the most competitive mwc? (especially compared to say 2k1).
Well myrks reply about ghols contesting flags was in response to you saying that teams back then were terrible because they sometimes had like 20% of units or whatever on their home flag in a ctf game. To put what myrk said into a little more detail so you possibly understand why this was sometimes the case in mwc CTF games :
In CTF in 2k1 (I think) it was unlike more recent mwcs in that you could get a bunch of points from simply *contesting* the enemies flags with any units. You didnt have to actually take their flag to get points. All you had to do was contest it and you would get points. The amount of points you got for contesting the opponents flag was directly proportional to the unit values of (a) the units defending the flag vs (b) the enemy units contesting the flag.
So the short version of this is that in ctf game back then if you simply contested the opponents flag with say 6 ghols vs 12 thrall on the flag you would get like almost as many points in that game as if you actually took their flag because you contested 12pts of units vs 12pts of units even though you know 6 non pus ghols has like zero chance of ever beating 12 thrall to get the flag. Hell you could suicide whatever you contested with just for laughs if you wanted to because it was just the contest itself that gave you a bunch of points.
So this was why many times you would see quite heavy defense on the flag in a ctf game so as to deprive the other team from getting a bunch of cheap contest points and making it close from a sneak contest flank or somesuch.
It was probably a great thing this got changed for future mwcs since the contest for points thing was pretty shitty.
RE: wwo in mwc.
I think wwo said in a previous post he was in CIRQUE in 2k1. If he didn't then I'll say I'm pretty sure he was in CIRQUE in 2k1 who finished 4th overall and had a pretty good mwc and were probably a possible finalist contender. I think I remember them having their best player (Jeff the meek?) lagout or something in the deciding game of their match vs monkey island and *cruiser* them up and lose them that match. The winner of cirque-monkey island went on to play 12inch in the bottom bracket finals so they did rather well and got screwed by a lagout or something at a crucial moment.
I think i was better in 2k1 than I am now in clicking and probably 90% of things for some reason!. I blame patches or rust or something i dunno.
I definitely think i was better in 2k1 than in 2006 which was apparently the peak of mwc competitiveness and skill!

don't care about the contesting ghol on a ctf flag or about the minor patch changes over the years. not sure what that has to do with anything. I assume you are talking about the melee change, which really didn't matter that much. if you think there is no skill in melee anymore, then feel free to come melee me sometime.
